Back of the Book:
Lily Walsh has never imagined anything like America. From supermarkets and swimsuits to the way women actually look men in the eye, she’s baffled by this strange land. Raised in a remote Asian village by her disciplinarian father, 24-year-old Lily is thrilled to visit her brother Jeff in Hawaii—until Jeff is called away on urgent business.
Left in the care of Jeff’s best friend, Gabe Kapaia, and his family, Lily discovers the paradise of Oahu’s north side at the Kapaia Resort. But she walks a fine line between two worlds. Can she embrace her new experiences without breaking her promise not to shame her missionary father? When Lily finds herself falling for Gabe, her heart is torn. Will her upbringing force her to make the difficult choice between true love and family honor?
My Review:
This book was really neat to read. You get insight into a completely new culture, where women are at a step below men in every aspect of life. Since Lily grew up living that way, she was completely taken aback at the American culture. Her brother and Gabe’s family were very understanding and helpful. They patiently showed her how American culture worked.
Lily was torn between doing what she thought her father wanted her to do and what she was being taught about America. She truly wanted to please everyone and not put anyone out. She sought a delicate balance. I often find myself trying to please everyone, but my situation is much easier to do that in. Lori showed that you can’t always please everyone, and you have to follow what God’s plan is.
It’s been so long since I’ve read this that I’m not able to give I an adequate review. I did enjoy it a whole lot, though.
