Back of the Book:
In 1888, Colorado was a dangerous place for a girl on the run. But Honor McCall had to escape from her drunken uncle. She never imagined that she’d be rescued by a handsome young minister of find a place to call home in his church.
The Rev. Jethro Peters’ kindness was more than she could ever repay. So how could she stay on—accepting charity while hiding the truth about the danger that stalked her and hiding her love for a man who might never return her feelings?
She had to leave, but she just couldn’t seem to go—and then Christmas brought a special miracle…
My Review:
I liked this book, but I sometimes questioned things about it. For one, why did the two characters love each other? It was really never explained…they just did. And I’m still unsure what it was about each other that they liked. Near the end I could see why he loved her, but why did she love him?
I was also frustrated by the fact that Honor kept her secret so long. I see why it fit into the story and how that all worked together, but I would have personally crumbled before then. I was practically screaming at her to just tell them, already. “Be more vulnerable. Let him comfort you!” That’s probably just a personal preference, though.
But I loved some aspects of this story: running away, hiding, fear, needing to be helped, being vulnerable, medical issues, etc. The emotions were deep and expressed very well. I was able to feel what Honor was feeling most of the time, and that is an important aspect of story-telling for me.
Overall, I’m glad I read this book. I enjoyed the experience and it was worth the lack of sleep I went through to finish it.
